Torrance Signage Rules Rules (2026): What You Need to Know

Torrance's home occupation regulations include strict prohibitions on signage to ensure that home businesses remain invisible to the surrounding residential neighborhood. No sign or display identifying the home occupation may be visible from the exterior of the premises. This includes window signs, lawn signs, banners, posters, or any other visual identification that the property is being used for business purposes.

The only exception is signage on a permitted vehicle associated with the home occupation. However, the vehicle itself must be stored in compliance with the home occupation permit requirements (typically inside the garage or on the driveway).

Furthermore, advertisements displayed in any media, including telephone directories, online business listings, and social media, may not give the street address of the home occupation location. This restriction is designed to prevent customer and client traffic to residential neighborhoods. The California Penal Code also prohibits posting signs on telephone poles, streetlight poles, utility poles, and traffic standards. The Torrance Municipal Code has specific exemptions for realty signs but no such exemption for home occupation signage.
