Pasadena Fire Pit Rules Rules (2026): What You Need to Know

Pasadena adopts the California Fire Code and is within the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) jurisdiction for burn day restrictions. Gas and propane fire pits are generally permitted in residential yards and are exempt from SCAQMD no-burn orders. Wood-burning fire pits and outdoor fireplaces must comply with SCAQMD regulations and are prohibited during mandatory no-burn advisories.

Pasadena's geography creates unique fire safety concerns. The northern portions of the city, particularly neighborhoods along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains (north of the 210 Freeway), are designated as Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Properties in these areas are subject to enhanced fire safety requirements, including 200-foot defensible space and brush clearance, stricter setback requirements for any open flame device, and additional inspection requirements. All fire pits must maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from structures, fences, and combustible materials. A fire extinguisher or connected garden hose must be accessible during use.
